Bella Mente Third in Copa del Rey MAPFRE; All Eyes Forward to World Championship

August 6, 2019 By Bella Mente Leave a Comment

PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN (August 6, 2019) — In a hard-fought three-way battle with Cannonball and Proteus, Hap Fauth’s (Naples, Fla.) Bella Mente wound up third in the Maxi 72 class at the 2019 Copa del Rey MAPFRE held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The six-day event, which concluded on Saturday, August 3rd, started with a four-day series (Monday, July 29th – Thursday, August 1st) comprised of seven races (one discard) that put Bella Mente in second place behind the Italian-flagged Cannonball. Then, in a unique twist on traditional scoring, Bella Mente was required to carry forward her resulting two-point score to be counted in her score line for the final racing series that saw three more races completed over two days (Friday and Saturday).

“After posting finishes on Friday of 3-1 to Cannonball’s 1-3, we had a chance to win it all going into the final race on Saturday,” said Bella Mente’s tactician Terry Hutchinson, “but in order to do so we had to win the race. If Cannonball took second, we would share the same score but beat them on countback in a tie breaker.”

In the final race, the American-flagged Proteus became the spoiler, winning the final race to secure second overall, while Cannonball finished second in the race to claim overall victory.

“Bella Mente had spent five days at the end of June tuning against Cannonball and Proteus,” said Hutchinson, explaining that Bella Mente’s primary focus now is September’s Maxi 72 World Championship, which Bella Mente has won three times. “To be successful at the Worlds in Porto Cervo, it is critical to know our strengths and weaknesses against our competition, and both the tuning and the Copa del Rey Mapfre regatta helped us further to determine those, so it was a good gain for Bella Mente.”

The Copa del Rey Mapfre was the first regatta to put the new Bella Mente (launched in September 2018) and its 20+ crew members through their paces since they competed in the Wirth M. Munroe Miami to Palm Beach Yacht Race last December. (For various reasons, Bella Mente had to bow out of competing in two Caribbean events and the Rolex Capri Sailing Week, which had originally been entered on its competition schedule.)

“It was good to set a base line for Bella Mente’s performance,” said Hutchinson. “To be successful in these boats, you have to develop in a smart manner. Cannonball is very fast and refined; Proteus and Bella Mente are much closer, but I would give a slight advantage to Proteus, especially upwind.”

Hutchinson added that while the Bella Mente Racing team delivered on all aspects of shore-side and racing excellence, there is work to do in the areas of “consistently good starts” and “putting together” races from start to finish.  “The other boats are very well sailed and for Bella Mente, it means we have some work to do, which is all good!”

All Systems Go for Bella Mente Racing

January 7, 2019 By Bella Mente Leave a Comment

Launched in September 2018, the new 72-foot Maxi yacht Bella Mente looks to be on course for attaining successes not unlike those achieved by its three previous namesakes owned and skippered by businessman and champion sailor Hap Fauth (Minneapolis, Minn./Naples, Fla.). Fauth and his all-star Bella Mente Racing Team are three-time Maxi 72 World champions shooting for a fourth world title while Fauth concurrently spearheads the New York Yacht Club’s American Magic challenge for the 2021 America’s Cup. And while juggling two of the world’s highest-profile sailing campaigns with running an industrial holding company the size of The Churchill Companies might be daunting to some, it only further energizes Fauth.

“If I were to wait two or three years, I might not have the same motivation to do this type of thing, so why not do it now?” said Fauth, age 73, after breaking the elapsed-time monohull record with the new Bella Mente in December’s 60-mile Wirth M. Munroe Regatta (Miami to Palm Beach).  “And besides, two sailing programs are twice the fun.”

According to Fauth, the Wirth M. Munroe Regatta was about testing Bella Mente in the notoriously rugged Gulf Stream before its first major race of 2019: the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s (RORC) Caribbean 600 in February. “There was no breakage, no mysterious sounds. The boat feels great; it’s very well balanced and easy to put in a groove and keep it there.”

The new Bella Mente was designed by Botin Partners in Spain and built at New England Boatworks in Rhode Island, where the boat went through seven days of sea trials after its launch. Terry Hutchinson, Bella Mente’s longtime tactician, who also is working with Fauth on the American Magic project, said he could tell “straightaway” that the boat was a winner.

“We dropped off some pretty big waves in Narragansett Bay and didn’t have to go in for anything going wrong,” said Hutchinson, explaining that Bella Mente was then shipped to West Palm Beach for more sea trials. The team sailed in more big waves and “nasty short, sharp chop…max runner, max mainsheet load; everything was wound on.” Everything hung in there; there were no issues.

“These are intricate boats, and the reason that happened is because of all the people that paid incredible attention to detail,” said Hutchinson. “It starts with the Captain (Peter Henderson) and follows through to the shore team and the build team.”

Hutchinson said the original plan had been to launch the boat and go straight to the 2018 Worlds; however, in the end it was determined that the schedule was too tight. “Had we done that, however, I think that the shore team and sailing crew would have done an unbelievable job of executing, and the boat would have performed just fine.” Though it’s a new boat, the sailing team (including offshore helmsman and crew boss Mike Sanderson, navigator Ian Moore and strategist Adrian Stead) is much the same as it has been for five years.

“We have guys that own their areas of expertise, and they’ve done laps around the world,” said Hutchinson. “We have good balance across the wide spectrum of racing that we do, and for the better part of three years the Bella Mente Racing Team has had a 75% winning percentage of regattas entered. It’s hard to complain about that.”

As for how he and Fauth will balance the two sailing campaigns, Hutchinson is direct with his answer: “Proper planning, clear objectives.”

Fauth agreed that the Bella Mente campaign will have its own energy separate from the American Magic campaign. “We’re going at this with the same discipline, the same passion and same commitment that we’ve applied to every one of our Maxi 72 campaigns,” he said. “We have the best people, the best resources, and we approach our sailing in the most efficient manner to get the best results.”

As CEO of the American Magic syndicate, Fauth says he and the other principals (Doug DeVos, Roger Penske) are giving their all to help their team progress to the America’s Cup finals to compete against defender Emirates Team New Zealand for the oldest trophy in international sport.

“It’s a path I’ve never been down before, but I’m pretty convinced I can handle this and the Bella Mente campaign at the same time,” said Fauth, pausing before laughing. “I have a great capacity for pain!”

Bella Mente Racing to Launch New Maxi 72 Yacht this Summer

February 8, 2018 By Bella Mente 2 Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Media Pro Int’l, Kirsten Ferguson, kirsten.ferguson@mediapronewport.com, 401-330-7889

NEWPORT, R.I. (February 8, 2018) – Hap Fauth (Minneapolis, Minn./Naples, Fla.) and his team on Bella Mente Racing made their first big splash onto the grand prix racing scene back in 2006, and this year the three-time Maxi 72 World Champions are preparing to make more waves with the launch of a new state-of-the-art Maxi 72 yacht. Designed by Botin Partners and built by New England Boatworks, the yacht is the fourth under the Bella Mente namesake and is set to be unveiled this July in Newport, R.I., just in time to be shipped to Porto Cervo, Sardinia for the 2018 Rolex Maxi 72 Worlds in September.

“I’m excited to dive into the development and build of a new yacht again and go through the process of figuring out how to optimize boat speed and get back into competition mode,” said Fauth, adding humorously that his team’s nickname among competitors is “Experimente” due to the in-depth testing and analyzing they perform on the boat each season. “When you’re sailing at this level, even the smallest details can be game changers. As we move forward with this new build, no stone can be left unturned.”

For New England Boatworks, this will be the third Bella Mente that it has built for Fauth. Located in Portsmouth, R.I, the premier boatyard is responsible for some of the world’s most high-performance yachts. The new Bella Mente build began this past December, and the boatyard team, as well as a team of Bella Mente Racing boatbuilders, are working in overdrive to ensure the yacht launches this summer.

“The Maxi 72 represents the epitome of the sport of sailing, so it is very exciting to be leading the charge on a project of this caliber,” said New England Boatworks Partner Tom Rich, adding that the class has gained more and more traction over the years, resulting in the International Maxi Association tightening up the rules in 2017. The class now strictly abides by the owner/driver rule, and all the yachts must fit the 72-foot length requirement. There is also a rating cap that narrows the performance differences between each yacht.

“Although there are very specific guidelines that we as builders and the designers must abide by, there is also quite a bit of room for innovation. Even the most subtle change can make a big difference.”

In addition to working together, Rich and Fauth have been friends for decades. “We have mutual respect for one another, and I certainly enjoy his company. He’s a very good sailor with a great gut instinct, and he’s very interested in getting knowledge out of people. He enjoys all the small and steady steps taken to improve the boat and its performance. “

When it comes to the team, the majority of Bella Mente Racing’s crew will stay the same as the previous year. Fauth will be joined in the afterguard by Volvo Ocean Race champion Mike Sanderson, two-time Olympian Adrian Stead and Tactician Terry Hutchinson, a two-time Rolex Yachtsman of the Year.

“It’s great to be on our way to getting the boat launched and racing to see what we can learn, but it will be a development process for sure,” said Hutchinson, adding that there are six Maxi 72s currently on the competitive race circuit, two of which are newer builds and didn’t hit their stride on the racecourse until either their third or fourth season. “Newer design and newer construction doesn’t guarantee a better result, but it does buy us time to begin the process of developing and optimizing the boat for the future. Our first challenge this year will be to quantify where we left off in 2017 with sail development, and our second challenge is to understand the dynamic of the rig and how the sail program interacts with it. From there, we need to learn the new boat’s mode versus the rest of the Maxi 72 fleet, which is the most critical component. With that said, we certainly have an exciting year on the horizon.”

Bella Mente Racing Wraps 2017 Race Campaign

PRESS RELEASE: Newport, R.I. (September 19, 2017) – After a week of fighting tooth and nail against Maxi 72 rivals, Bella Mente Racing wrapped up the Rolex Maxi 72 World Championships in Porto Cervo, Sardinia earlier this month, taking third place overall. The regatta is the team’s pinnacle event each year and concludes its 2017 campaign.

“Thanks to the Bella Mente Racing team for their dedication and commitment to our effort this year, and standby for new developments with the boat,” said Owner/Driver Hap Fauth who has helmed Bella Mente in The Maxi 72 Worlds for the last six years, three of those times taking the championship title. “The Maxi 72 fleet gets better and better each year. This past week allowed us to match up against four other top Maxi 72 teams, and it was incredible to see how fast and competitive they all are. A big congratulations to Dieter Schön and his Momo crew, which turned in an excellent performance on the water.”

The regatta started off on a high note for Bella Mente Racing, with the team playing the light winds and shifts to their favor and winning the first day of racing. But as the week progressed, the breeze built, and Momo moved to the front of the pack. Bella Mente closed the gap between the leading boats significantly on the final day when it finished first and second in the last two races, finishing in third place overall – less than two points behind Momo in first place and less than one point behind Proteus in second place.

“The 2017 Maxi 72 World Championship event was a game of two halves,” said Tactician Terry Hutchinson, adding that Bella Mente’s performance peaked on the days when the breeze was below 12 knots but fell behind when it built to 15 knots and above. “There was a clear distinction between our performance compared to that of the three newer boats (Momo, Cannonball and Proteus), and this gives the team an area of focus as we go into our off season. Collectively, we need to evaluate our performance using sailor impressions and the performance analysis systems in place to develop our work list. The trend that we saw in Porto Cervo has been on display all year, yet I would say that Bella Mente was closer to the others at this event.”

Preparing to Defend Maxi 72 World Championship Title

PRESS RELEASE: Porto Cervo, Sardinia (August 23, 2017) — The Maxi 72 World Championships are quickly approaching and Hap Fauth and his Bella Mente Racing team are going hard at it, working to improve boat speed with the goal of defending their title of World Champion for the third consecutive year. The regatta – scheduled September 4-9 in Porto Cervo, Sardinia (Italy) – is the final and most important event on Bella Mente Racing’s calendar. It will host the most competitive Maxi 72 teams from around the world, and this year, the playing field is more stacked than ever.

“Our 2017 campaign has been challenging and mercurial from the get-go, and we have yet to find our rhythm,” said Tactician Terry Hutchinson, adding that Bella Mente Racing kicked off this year’s six-event campaign program on a high note with the overall win at the RORC Caribbean 600 in Antigua.  The team fell short, however, just last month when it took fourth place behind rival Maxi 72s at Copa del Rey in Mallorca. “A lot of factors contribute to this, and yet in its simplest form, our competitors have mirrored Bella Mente’s winning approach over the 2015 and 2016 season,” said Hutchinson alluding to the performance of Momo, which took the Maxi 72 Class win at Copa del Rey. “That boat looks great and the team sailed very well.  To win in Porto Cervo will require perfection and a bit of luck.  Our crew is up to the task; it’s a matter of execution on the race course, boat speed, and confidence in the team.”

Launched in 2012, the 72-foot Bella Mente is a Judel/Vrolijk design and the oldest boat in the Maxi 72 fleet. Since it sports a hull shape much different than its newer counterparts, the team is constantly working on enhancements and modifications to keep the Maxi 72 in the game and competitive.

“The Maxi 72 fleet as a whole is just much faster this year,” said Owner/Driver Hap Fauth. “Our team is outstanding, but our performance this year is proof that there are things we can do to improve boat speed. Many of the Maxi 72 teams we’ll be going up against next month have made substantial improvements to their set-up, including jumping ahead of us in terms of their fitted keel bulb package, which has given them some advantage upwind, especially in winds above ten knots. “We’re in the process of making some major modifications to the boat to better prepare for the Worlds and hopefully that will be the game changer.”

For Fauth, attention to detail and extreme preparedness are keys to success in a program that has so many moving parts. “We travel with about 30 people and three 40-foot containers. In addition to the sailors, we have a shore crew to repair the boat when we aren’t on the water, a chef, and professional point people onsite to manage the hydraulics, sails, winches, carbon fiber…the list goes on.

“If the boat is broken, we can’t race, so the idea is that you have people there that can fix the boat almost irrespective of what the problem is. We also come fully prepared with quite an inventory of additional equipment, including sails, parts for all the hydraulics and winch systems. Pretty much anything else that moves on the boat, we have a duplicate for.”

In less than two weeks it is “all systems go” for the Maxi 72 Class, and Bella Mente Racing’s hard work will be put to the test.

“I think we’re ready to rock and roll and give them the best we have,” added Fauth. “Bring it on!”

Bella Mente Takes Third Overall in Inaugural Corfu Challenge

July 11, 2017 By Bella Mente Leave a Comment

The inaugural Corfu Challenge brought on a demanding five days of competition to the Maxi 72 Class, but it was Bella Mente Racing’s win in the final two races in the seven-race regatta that secured the team’s spot on the podium in third place overall – behind Proteus and Momo, which went on to take first and second overall, respectively. The event, which kicked off Tuesday, July 4 and wrapped up this past Saturday, July 8, marked Bella Mente’s first time racing in the waters off Corfu, Greece.

“It’s always nice to be on the podium after a regatta, especially when it takes place in a new venue,” said Bella Mente Racing Owner/Driver Hap Fauth. “We had a slow start to the regatta and had to make a lot of adjustments, but winning on the last two days was affirmation of our ongoing competitiveness. We have an exciting remainder of the season on the horizon, with the Maxi 72 teams as competitive as ever this year.”

Terry Hutchinson, who joins Fauth in the afterguard added, “It was definitely a solid end to the Corfu Challenge. Early on in the week Bella Mente struggled to find her rhythm, with things not quite going our way, be it self imposed or mother nature, but like most things in sport it takes getting smacked around to have a good look at the adjustments required. Finishing the event with a 3,1,1 in the final three races was a great indication of the fight inside Bella Mente. We cannot help but see the improvements to Cannonball, Momo, and Proteus. They are very fast and polished teams. For the next two events it will be interesting to see what all the teams can develop over a wide range of conditions.”

Bella Mente Racing is looking forward to matching up against its Maxi 72 rivals again later this month in Mallorca, Spain for Copa Del Rey MAPFRE followed by the Rolex Maxi 72 World Championship in Porto Cervo, Italy in September.
