Race day 2

January 18, 2012 By Bella Mente Leave a Comment

The schedule was changed last night with us starting an hour earlier and 3 races planned. The forecast was for about 15 knots.
We were one of the first ones on the race course this morning. We warmed up sailing upwind in somewhat lighter conditions. We started the first race in about 15 knots starting at the boat and tacking immediately. We seemed to struggle finding our speed and good lanes. We finished 5th.
The second race had us in a good mid line start with clean air. We led most of the race only to get passed on the second half of the last run, giving us a 2nd. We seemed to have some decent speed in the light pressure of 10-12 knots. But we got stuck in the bottom right corner downwind and struggled to find a lane back to the finish.
In the third race, all boats were pushing the line hard, setting up at about 1:20 with lots of time to burn. We were in the middle leeward part of the line with Quantum to leeward of us. We pushed hard to leeward to avoid an OCS and were able to squeak out a clean start going fast. We led around the course with Quantum really pushing us and almost even with us on the last beat. But we fought hard and were able to win the race.
Tomorrow is a light forecast. So stay tuned for more.

Race Day 1

January 16, 2012 By Bella Mente Leave a Comment

2 Race today.
Conditions started out lighter than expected at about 15-17 knots for the first race. We had an average start with clear air but we struggled a little on the first beat with a smaller jib. We made it around the top, set and ripped down wind. We were plenty busy as on average the runs were about 8-10 minutes. As soon as the kite and staysail going, we got straight into swapping jibs. We gybed on layline and were hauling straight to the left hand mark. Just before the left mark, we had to go behind a boat and that delayed our drop. We really struggled with the drop getting the kite barely to the headstay on a weather drop with most of it in the water. We were lucky to not have shrimped it. After some tugging, we got it back on board, just slightly more damp than earlier. Mickey did a nice job on the beat sorting the kite but by the time we got to top mark again, it was time to swap to the A2. We finished the race in 4th.
Between races we were quite busy, bagging 2 jibs, packing 2 kites and bailing out some water. The breeze picked up for the second race with 20-23 knots. A few boats had some damage due to the conditions so were happy to keep it all in one piece. We had some fast runs with steady speeds around 18 knots. We also finished 4th in the second race. It was plenty physical work out there today. We are a little bummed to have not finished better but we also know where we can pick up a few lengths here and there. We are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow.
Tomorrow looks to be more moderate with breeze forecast around 15-16 knots.

Practice in Key West

January 15, 2012 By Bella Mente Leave a Comment

We have been in Key West for 4 days now sailing on the chartered TP 52 Origin.
We had 2 days of very good practice getting our boat handling down and working on our boat speed. The last 2 days however have been frustrating. Yesterday was about 22 knots and we pulled part of the track off the mast that is used for the main cunno. We came in and got that sorted and were promised another good day of breeze today. However damage again today took us out prematurely. This time the main started pulling out a little at the top of the mast at one of the full battens. Upon checking the track after we got in, we found the track to be cracked and in need of repair. Ollie and Thomas have fixed it after a few trips up the rig. The racing will start tomorrow with still a good breeze forecast. We are excited to get out there and race. There will be 8 52s racing and it looks like we will have some good competition. Stay tuned for a report tomorrow.

Florida sailing

December 20, 2011 By Bella Mente Leave a Comment

The team has been plenty busy over the last couple of weeks. We all met up in Palm Beach, FL for a couple of days of sailing and idea exchanges for the new boat. Hap has chartered a TP 52 for Key West. We will be sailing Origin’s old boat. We trained on the boat for 3 days and were supposed to race over the weekend in Palm Beach. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and we were not able to race over the weekend.
The 3 days of practice took place in some good breeze and waves and were able to work through quite a few things. It was nice to get the team back together and sailing again. We are all looking forward to racing in Key West. There will be a fleet of 8 52s so it will be some good racing.
The new boat is coming along nicely. Pirate and Rob O have been working hard to nail down lots of the details. The rig is also being constructed at the same time so Pirate is carrying double duty.

New boat update from Pirate

November 16, 2011 By Bella Mente Leave a Comment

The Hull came off the mold at the beginning of Nov. All went well and looks great. The Hull is back in the oven, leveled, scanned and the internal patching has been installed and cooked. Bulkheads will begin to go in next week, with just the Mast bulkhead left on the table. The drive unit will go in next week as well. The Hull will remain upside down for all this work, so fairing can occur simultaneously.

Work on the deck continues. Structure has begun to be installed. The forward and companion way hatches have been installed. Thomas has been helping Jon Williams align and install the winch system structure, bases and Pedestals.

The engine arrived last week. We will mock it up on the bench and strip it of any excess weight and learn all we can.

Ryan and JV have been busy reconfiguring container world and helping with the build when possible.

The mold for the keel structure has been CNC cut, built and post cured. A significant amount of lamination begins next week.

You can see from the attached photos that the boat will have a bit more volume than the previous boat.

We continue to work on refining the yacht’s systems. The global rig geometry and laminate design is finished. Hall, Alex and I continue to work refining the fittings.

Rob has done a great job keeping this complicated project moving fwd and on schedule.

Congrats to Hap. Last week the NYYC awarded Hap the Mosbacher Trophy. This award is given to the NYYC Yachtsman of the Year. Well deserved Hap!

Talk to you soon,

Pirate
